HOUSE OF A THOUSAND WHEELS
by BRUTALISMUS 3000

A fog-thick village where time folds like laundry.

Every house has a guard dog, and when you walk by, they all start barking. The smoke from the chimneys is thicker than in any place I know, but the stars are brighter than anywhere I’ve ever been.

Every house is lined up. Every lawn, too. Twice a night, Grandpa gets up to put more wood in the oven in the basement so everyone can sleep cozy.

My granddad built a ski lift when I was a kid. It was right behind my grandparents’ house. The whole village was allowed to use it for free. He used to be a ski flyer. He smuggled instruments across the border through the forest—on skis. My mother got an accordion. My grandma has an American accent, but she’s not American. Her teeth are gone, but her humor stayed. Borovička and treska bread for breakfast. My granddad used to have a bakery, so the bread was always fresh and warm. When I met Theo, he had the same Slavic haircut as the boys from the village—also their cheekbones. Small-town judgment ate you, or you ate it.

I hear a choir of older women singing about love or past lovers. They meet in perfect harmonies. Sometimes my grandmother sings along. Their voices remind people of goats that ran away and never came back. My babka loves singing forbidden songs.

Outside the house, a thousand wheels—traded in Germany for local beer. They watch CCTV on their TV, but the matriarch observes the yard through the window like an eagle. She is in charge of the backyard business.

Every dog they had was called Waldi. They were all taller than me. Their last German shepherd was accidentally shot in the woods by a hunter, so they never got a new one after that.

Babka stirs the goulash. She loves feeding my post-Soviet tummy. Beer and slivovica have become their holy water. There is a house at the Slovakian border, with three ambulances and thousands of wheels in the yard. The people who live there have a long, long past.
