The Nigerian singer, songwriter, and rising star, who just released her debut EP "Fluid," has already captured our hearts. During a quick stop in Paris, she talks about her musical inspirations, how she discovered her passion for music, and why she's going to become your favorite Afrobeats artist.
.
How did music enter your life? Was there a moment when you realized you wanted to work in this field?
I started singing at a very young age, but when I was little, I didn't really know how to become a musician. I didn't realize I could actually sing well. When I went to church, they always put me in front of the choir to lead, and I always wondered why. They heard my voice and thought, "Oh, she sings well!" But I didn't understand that until I was 13 or 14. I was in high school then, and I started listening to and getting to know my own voice. I got so much feedback from people that I decided to write my own songs.
.
After writing my first song, I thought, "Okay, this is it, this is my role in this world, this is what I want to be, I want to be a star!" I felt like I had found my home, that I had found this thing that gives me energy. From that moment on, I couldn't imagine doing anything else.
.
.
Do you remember how old you were when you wrote your first song?
It was around the same time, I think I was 14.
.
Wow, you were so young!
I've been writing since I was very young; my first memories of writing go back to when I was in high school and joined a boy band from our school. I was the only girl in the group.
.
Were you the lead singer?
Yes, of course!
